Meet the winners of the inaugural edition of the Sard Al Thahab Award in the unpublished short story category and explore the outstanding contributions that earned them the award for their valuable addition to this art form.
The Sard Al Thahab Award was inspired by the visionary poetry of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to be a focal point for combining creativity and thought, to create an artistic movement that will make Sheikh Zayed's creative experience a focal point towards new forms of creativity.
The award aims at stimulating creative activity in the field of storytelling, folk narratives, and related studies, enriching the contemporary Arab creative scene with new writings that draw from the authentic Arab folk heritage.
It also seeks to discover and appreciate the talents of distinguished writers in this artistic domain.
Winners of the Sard Al Thahab Unpublished Short Story category:
- Moroccan author Abdelrahim Selili for his story ‘Zilzal’ (Earthquake).
- Egyptian author Mahmoud Saeed Mohamed for his story ‘Ibn Aarous: Almataha wal-Khalas’ (Ibn Aarous: The Maze and the Salvation).
- Egyptian author Rania Ahmed Helal Kamel for her story ‘Ma Bayn Shiqqay Raha’ (Between Two Millstones).
- Moroccan author Huda Al Shamashi for her story ‘Marthiyat al-’Itr wal-Bahr’ (Elegy of Fragrance and the Sea).
An Egyptian author and poet who began publishing his writings on his own blog before moving on to literary pages on various online platforms, such as ‘Masrawy’, and the newspapers ‘Al Shorouk’ and ‘Ad-Dustour’. He published one short story collection titled ‘Ruh Safiya’, released by Maqam Publishing and Distribution in June 2020, which was shortlisted for the Sawiris Cultural Award for the Best Short Story Collection in 2000.
He holds a degree in IT engineering.
